Sure, you can count on Starbucks to provide you with a good cup of coffee as the experience is pretty much the same from location to location, but they aren’t the only game in town. If you are looking for something different, unique and its own personality, choose one of the following independent coffee shops. You won’t be sorry.

Urban Coffee Lounge
9744 NE 119th Way, Kirkland, WA 98034 (425) 820-7788

12348 NE 115th PL., Kirkland, Wa 98033 (425) 285-9114

Jeff and Alicia Miner invite you to one or both of their coffee lounges which is a passion project for both of them. Alicia has the coffee background and Jeff is an architect by trade, so this is a place where you can count on a good cup of Joe while taking in and enjoying what Jeff describes is a “mixed modern industrial” environment that is warm and comfortable. They consider it a “marriage” of a love of design and a passion for great coffee and you probably will too.

Caffe Rococo
136 Park Lane, Kirkland, WA 98033 (425) 803-9081

Located in downtown Kirkland, Cafee Rococo is a partnership of Adam Olsen and Kent Beidel which isn’t just another coffee shop. These guys run a specialty coffee roaster in addition to their café so you can actually see the heart and soul that goes into every espresso beverage they serve. The relaxed atmosphere is perfect for a break from the office during the week or a great place to stop with the family and enjoy some pastries made by The Alki Bakery. If you plan well, you just might be entertained by local musicians during your visit as well.

Top Pot Doughnuts
18001 Bothell Everett Highway, Bothell, WA 98012, (206) 631-2061

What’s better than a great cup of coffee? One that’s paired with a big o’ doughnut. Top Pot Doughnuts gets high marks for their “hand-forged” doughnuts (which are huge by the way and come in 40 different varieities) but they are just as fussy about the coffee that they serve as well making Top Pot a “must see” destination. “We select the finest beans from around the world and hand-roast them in small batches, taking special care to ensure each batch is roasted to perfection,” says the doughnut chain.

Spotted Cow Coffee Company
15118 Main Street, Suite 700, Mill Creek, Wa, 98012, (425) 357.9464

Located in Mill Creek, the Spotted Cow’s tagline is “If it wasn’t for coffee, who know what would get done?” This popular roaster/coffee shop is one of a kind and is decked out with an industrial chic look highlighted with blackboard signage and rustic looking tables and chairs. It offers bar seating so visitors can watch the roasting process, house-made caramel and vanilla syrups and incredible homemade ice creams and Italian gelato. If you enjoy your coffee, consider taking home a bag of beans.
